Slacking…but back with a vengeance

One of my own creations – a Hanky Panky Photo by me

I have been slacking on posts lately, so it is time to get back in the saddle.

First off, I am going to sing the praises of Bellwoods Social House.
My buddy Arianne Fielder is heading up the bar program, and has an all-star staff on hand.
I have not had food, but I have been in two Fridays in a row for after-work cocktails…and I am impressed.

G and Tea. Photo by Me.

Week 1 I had a G and Tea. (Ford’s Gin, Cocchi Americano, black tea, lemongrass, lemon and thyme)

Week 2 was a Kentucky Sundress. I was a little concerned that it might be a girly drink, but Alyssa and Rebecca convinced me it was basically a Manhattan. Very manly. Made with Woodford Reserve, strawberry and rosemary infused blanc vermouth, St. Germain, and orange bitters (with a green chartreuse rinse).

Next time I am going to try the old fashioned. I just always try to order things in a bar that I do not make at home (and I make a mean old fashioned).

They are also doing a really cool shot program with shots and backs inspired by bars from around Atlanta and across the country.

I have not had food yet, but the staff had a great looking Asian noodle and shrimp salad. They really seemed to like it. Other folks seem to like it quite a bit.

Bandeja paisa from Kiosco in Marietta Photo by Me.

Speaking of food, Linds and I had a date night at Kiosco in Marietta. You can see my plate was full.  I am a sucker for the Bandeja paisa. We also painted ceramics for the kiln. She won the painting contest. Results (with photos) to come in a later blog.

Blue Skies and Hookups

I am pretty sure that if you live in Georgia…you already know this, but in case you don’t…today was gorgeous. Right now my weather station says 79 degrees and 46% humidity. That weather is Denver-like.

My friend Jessica hooked me up with a whiskey that you can’t find yet in Georgia. Everyone on the internet was raving about TX Blend. Now I have a bottle.  I will give you some tasting notes when I crack it open.

A Couple of Items

I will leave you with a laugh. This made me think of me.Fitzgerald11-17-13Shawk Yeah, he does.

If the Wife is Doing it…

I have not written on this page in a long time. I think if Lindsey can get her blog on … then I can definitely get back in the saddle. She is doing a great job. Posting about my severe toe injury and the odyssey of the file cabinet. I am writing this tonight as I slowly sip a
Bufflalo Trace and Cointreau Manhattan.
1 dash Angosutra Bitters
1 dash Cointreau
2 oz Buffalo Trace

Oleo Saccharum – Fancy way of saying lemon peel and sugar

I have upped the game in my cocktail making lately. I have made a ton of infused simple syrups. I also tried my hand at Oleo Saccharum. The verdict is out…but I am pretty sure I will make it again.

Here are a few drinks I want to throw together: Bourbon Bramble
Homemade Zima
Blackberry Pimms Cup

Shifting gears…HomestarRunner is BACK! That makes me very happy. I hope there are some new Teen Girl Squad toons soon.

Vision S Series
Vision Grill…Not a Big Green Egg.

We made the plunge and got a kamado grill. Hopefully it will be here this week. I can’t wait to break out some pork shoulder, and all the other fun things you can do with a cooker and a smoker. I have heard great things about the Visions.  I am pretty sure I will be happy with it in the long run. I just could not justify the price of a Big Green Egg.  I am pretty excited about cooking on it.

Goodbye to a best friend

So  I realized tonight that my Facebook posting rules so some of you might not be up to date on what has been happening. We had to go to the vet and have Hugo put down this morning. It was a tough couple of days for the family, and I am not even sure that Sarah Kate has figured out what happened yet. We are going to wait for her to ask before we have a talk about it with her.

Hugo was my best friend for 13 years.  I will miss him terribly.
I wrote some things down earlier this week that I wanted to share about him.

To the best cat to ever utter a meow:

There are so many things that I can say about you.

You have been my best friend for almost as long as I can remember. From the day you showed up on my doorstep in LaGrange…we have been partners. Sitting in the north facing window (looking to your Canadian homeland), chattering at the various birds and squirrels that dared to cross your path, answering my whistle. (It will always be the Hugo whistle to this family), busting in like the Kool-Aid man to get your water from the shower. You loved to spend time in the sun, just lounging…but always quick to answer with a meow if I called your name.

You graciously allowed Frankie to join us when Linds moved in. You (begrudgingly) gradually came to know Lidsey as Mom.

Hugo did not like when Mom watched Glee.

I remember the time that I totally freaked out on a pizza man…because you escaped from the apartment. Luckily…you hadn’t gone far, and I corralled you back inside.

I think you spent most every night for the last 12 years sleeping between my legs, or at the foot of the bed. You were also pretty cool when we brought home a baby. Sometimes you even let Sarah Kate pull your tail without popping her in the head.

I am writing this while you are still around. I don’t want to try and remember these things after you are gone. My real hope is that I made your life maybe even half as awesome as you made mine.

I am not sure that I could have ever ordered a better cat. You did a great job finding me. I will miss you terribly. There will be a real void in my life without you around. I know there is a great debate about animals and heaven. But honestly if you are not waiting for me at the rainbow bridge…then I am not sure heaven will be what I expect it to be.

Laid Back….Sippin’ on Gin and Juice

I have some cool things to share. Hope everyone had a nice and relaxing Independence Day week. Time to get back at it at the office. Definitely hard to believe we have hit the mid-point of summer (and the year for that matter).

Found this link to some good summer cocktails. I have been on a gin kick lately. Mostly really good gin.

OK, add Mun, and this should be my most-viewed post EVER!
As Daniel Bryan would say… “Yes, Yes, Yes!!”

I could not go without mentiong how dissappointed I was to learn about the drug-related suspension of NASCAR’s A.J. Allmendinger. If it wasn’t a false positive, then I hope that A.J. can get his stuff together. There is no doubt that he is talented.

And congrats to Kevin and DeLana Harvick on the birth of their son…if you read his statement, you realize that despite his reputation…he really is a pretty good guy.

”Waiting on Keelan was the longest nine months of my entire life,” Kevin Harvick said in a statement. ”But time literally stood still when I held our baby for the first time. I’ve accomplished a lot in my life that I’m proud of, but those moments don’t hold a candle to becoming a father and seeing that little face looking up at you.

”DeLana and I are just amazed by how special and rewarding this is.”

This should do it for this week. Trying to get back into a regular posting habit. I got some good fishing stuff saved up to share. This was just more of a post about drinking.

Seven Things…Unemployment Edition

Seven things I have learned while being unemployed

  1. I should smile more in interviews
  2. Finding a job can take a while – even longer if you are picky
  3. You can live on far less money than you think you can
  4. I have the best wife that I can ask for
  5. I love how much time I have been able to spend with my kid
  6. I told you about the Dan Patrick Show already
  7. You think that there are lots of hours in a day when you are at home…there aren’t

The Weekly Updates Will Resume Until Morale Improves

It has been just a bit over a week since my last post. I was hoping to be more regular than that…but I got a curve ball last week with some health issues. Doc is still looking to see if there is anything still amiss, but I feel tons better this week.

S.K. loves bubbles
It was a nice weekend to be outside....

Sarah Kate and I had a nice dad-daughter weekend while L. went to her Mom’s wedding in Myrtle Beach. We had a great time at home, watched some of the race (more on that on the way) and some college football, mixed in with some bubble-blowing, Moe’s-eating, car-riding and house-playing.

I have been using some new news tools over the past week or so. Some of them (Zite) are iPad only, while others (SkyGrid) are for iPad or Android.  I find them a nice way to keep tabs on stories that you care about.

The oxford comma discussion was followed by some new chatter on the one space vs. two at the end of a sentence. Truth be told, I am a two space guy who has really been working to become a one space guy. You may actually find some double spaces in this post…even though I am doing my best to stick to one. I guess I am in the in-between age that learned to use a keyboard on a real typewriter.  We also had computer classes, but all we learned there was how to program in BASIC (with maybe a bit of FORTRAN).

At this point I went off into a tangent about Petit Le Mans.  I turned it into a separate, stand-alone post. Go read it if you haven’t (and if you care).

Weekly Best

This is the look of a race driver. The photo of TK is also very cool.

Another video feature this week with The Dirty Guv’nahs.  This video is really great…and something I would guess we would! have come up with if you told us to make a video when we were in college.

Things I Have Learned in my “Transition”

I have a Dan Patrick mancrush.
The Georgia Department of Labor likes for you to call it the “Career Center” rather than the “Unemployment Office”
There are plenty of jobs out there in my field, but competition is tight, and you still get most of your good leads by word of mouth.
I can survive for several days without a triple venti no foam 1 raw sugar latte.
This is going to be a real positive when I come out on the other side.

Now on to the fun stuff:

This is not that ugly
Maybe I just hate yellow and green...but Under Armor > Nike

College football should be entertaining this weekend.

The Dawgs should get a W against the Chanticleers — The what you say?
Coastal Carolina’s head coach apparently likes Dogs.
(Can you believe that there are people who still have not seen that video?)

Oh, and I get to root for Clemson over Auburn.

Lindsey is addicted to Pinterest.  She has some great stuff on her board.

I am still using Google+, though not as much as I did at first.  Most of the folks over there are fishing types, and a couple of other real life friends.
