The Weekly Updates Will Resume Until Morale Improves

It has been just a bit over a week since my last post. I was hoping to be more regular than that…but I got a curve ball last week with some health issues. Doc is still looking to see if there is anything still amiss, but I feel tons better this week.

It was a nice weekend to be outside....

Sarah Kate and I had a nice dad-daughter weekend while L. went to her Mom’s wedding in Myrtle Beach. We had a great time at home, watched some of the race (more on that on the way) and some college football, mixed in with some bubble-blowing, Moe’s-eating, car-riding and house-playing.

I have been using some new news tools over the past week or so. Some of them (Zite) are iPad only, while others (SkyGrid) are for iPad or Android.  I find them a nice way to keep tabs on stories that you care about.

The oxford comma discussion was followed by some new chatter on the one space vs. two at the end of a sentence. Truth be told, I am a two space guy who has really been working to become a one space guy. You may actually find some double spaces in this post…even though I am doing my best to stick to one. I guess I am in the in-between age that learned to use a keyboard on a real typewriter.  We also had computer classes, but all we learned there was how to program in BASIC (with maybe a bit of FORTRAN).

At this point I went off into a tangent about Petit Le Mans.  I turned it into a separate, stand-alone post. Go read it if you haven’t (and if you care).

Weekly Best

This is the look of a race driver. The photo of TK is also very cool.

Another video feature this week with The Dirty Guv’nahs.  This video is really great…and something I would guess we would! have come up with if you told us to make a video when we were in college.

Post Petit Thoughts

What started off as an addition to a weekly post has taken a life of its own and moved to a separate post.

Due to the wedding, I did not make the trip to Road Atlanta for the race. This is the first Petit I have missed in several years. I did watch the majority of the race on ESPN 3.

The big controversy to come out of this one will be the dustup between the number 1 Audi R18 piloted by Romain Dumas and the the Number 8 Peugeot 908 driven by Franck Montagny. Check out the video of the incident (Make sure you watch the video before you read any further…I do not want to taint any unbiased opinions).

Now, I am not opposed to calling this particular crash a racing incident. Montangny clearly came over in front of the Audi, but he was still (mostly) in the racing line. Dumas was a bit optimistic about making that move at that point on the track, because he had a great jump on the Pug, and probably could have made a nice drafting pass further down the long Road Atlanta backstretch. Dr. Ullrich (one of my motorsport heroes) was not happy with Franck.

Audi released this series to show that the Pug moved over. Click to embiggen.

I am truly shocked by the number of mistakes made by AudiSport this year. Driver errors in LMS events, big shunts at LeMans…all very un Audi-like.

As for who is to blame for the Road Atlanta crash…I think this is just the latest “racing incident” between the squads. However, I guess my biggest question is how long do we continue to call these “incidents” and not point at least some of the blame at aggressive (and maybe a bit unsporting) Peugeot drivers?

There is going to be a shakeup on both sides of the battle next season as far as factory drivers go. Dindo Capello, who has a fantastic history with Audi has reportedly raced his last race for the make. McNish has had some issues this season, but should be back. It will be hard to move Tom Kristensen anywhere. But Andre Lotterer, Marcel Fassler, Romain Dumas, Benoui Treuleyer and even long-time test pilot Marco Bonanomi are ready to go. It would be my guess that Mike Rockenfeller will turn laps somewhere but might also be moved on down the road. I have no idea what will shake out with the Peugot drivers, but rumor has it that the French are looking to make some moves before next season as well. I would only say that – no matter what – Anthony Davidson needs to stay.

The embattled Scott Tucker got the LMP2 win for Level 5 Motorsports.

As for GT, it was a nice race there.  Ferrari (AF Corse)  gets a win, The Flying Lizards bang out a hard fought second place (Thanks to Bergmeister), and BMW slots in at third.

LMPC and GTC also saw some nice battles for championships.

Next year’s Petit has seen a date change, pushed back to later in October. (see the full 2012 schedule)  I don’t hate the change, although the late September/early October date always had fantastic weather.

Started on Thursday…

Watching a show about the way that Coca-Cola gets bottled. Things sure have changed since the days that I hung out in a bottling plant. That was a long time ago though.  Probably around 1980.

Field and Stream loves the Costa 580s.  I do too. I can’t say enough good things about them. Best glasses I have ever owned.
Making some turbinado simple syrup this weekend. I Saw it on Unique Eats. If you are not watching that…you should be.

The Art of Manliness is always a good blog to read. I seem to get lots of tips and info from it…on a regular basis. This article on rhetoric is one of the best reads I have seen in a long time.

Have a nice group for the NCAA pickem this year, I was in mid-pack as of press time.

Sebring 12 Hour is this weekend.  Last race for the R15+.  New R18 will be the top dog after this.  I am hoping they can pull it out against Peugeot.

Probably will crank out another update before the weekend is done.

Yeah! Burger? More like Meh! Burger

Chomping at the bit for a long holiday weekend.  Nice Timing…badly needed.  Good things happening around me right now, lets hope the momentum continues.  I got certified in CPR this week.  I am glad I did it.  I think it might be a great idea for any parent.

We had dinner tonight at the highly touted (by some folks I trusted)  Yeah! Burger in Atlanta.  Not sure if we caught it on an off night or what…but it was less than stellar.

I need this dip bowl. Very funny. (from moldychum.com)

This Planet LeMans article made me realize that despite the continued tough times for sports car racing in the U.S., for the first time in a long time there is an International Sports Car Championship.  It even has a leg that I will be attending.

Some racing on tap this weekend,
Atlanta for NASCAR
Indy is in Kentucky – Ed Carpenter is on pole (STFU!)

Also in the ATL this weekend: DragonCon, and the College GameDay Crew.

A lot of my friends are excited about the start of college football this weekend…I would be happier if it actually felt at all like fall.

I actually won an internets contest this week!
Thanks to the folks at the Hungry Southerner – an all Atlanta crew (SVM to be exact) they are in the sidebar, and if you don’t read them…you should be!

Heather Morris is a good reason to watch Glee!

Jalopnik took Danica to task Friday.  They missed the mark a bit (one glaring error referred to a “track bar” as a “truck bar”), and were pretty vicious.  That being said, the part about her not trying to learn car setups…dead on.
This guy is catching trout…by hand!

Dagmar Midcap has turned in her bluescreen clicker (I had not heard about her boyfriend’s suicide)

Not sure how much I believe that this is actually a summer dish…but I will give the corn chowder a shot.
